Pakistan Emerges as Top Grain Exporter to China in 2022

In a significant achievement, Pakistan secured a spot among the top ten exporters of grain and grain products to China in 2022. The total value of these exports amounted to $456 million, representing an impressive growth rate of 14.12% year-on-year.

According to the 2023 China Import Food Report released at the China Import Food Summit during the China International Import Expo (CIIE) in Shanghai, Pakistan’s success in the Chinese market has been commendable. Muhammad Omair, a Pakistani sesame and rice dealer, expressed his delight at the vibrant consumption market and deemed China a crucial market for their products. Omair’s company alone has exported over 150 containers of sesame to China this year, and he aims to further enhance this figure by setting up an exhibition stand at CIIE.

The success of Pakistan’s grain export can be attributed to factors such as low shipping costs, competitive pricing, and high-quality products offered under the bilateral free trade agreement. Sesame, in particular, has gained popularity among oil extraction companies in China due to its high oil content. Pakistan has witnessed remarkable growth in sesame exports, with a value of $56,446,268 recorded in the first three quarters of this year, marking a 41% increase compared to the same period in 2022, as per statistics from China’s General Administration of Customs.

Additionally, broken rice, primarily used as animal feed, has also found a favorable market in China. Despite challenges like floods, Pakistan’s exports of broken rice to China have shown consistent growth over the past three years. Muhammad Omair mentioned that last year alone, they exported between 70-200 containers of broken rice to China on a monthly basis. China’s General Administration of Customs has reported a 20% increase in imports of broken rice from Pakistan.

The CIIE, functioning without the hindrance of the pandemic, presents excellent opportunities for Pakistani and other international businesses to leverage the vast and open market that China offers. Muhammad Omair emphasized the significance of the offline event in providing lucrative matchmaking prospects.

With continuous growth, Pakistan’s presence among the top grain exporters to China highlights the nation’s potential in the international trade market. Through competitive pricing, high-quality products, and favorable market conditions, Pakistan’s rice and sesame industry has successfully penetrated China, paving the way for further expansion and economic development.
