Pakistan Emerges as a Top Grain Exporter to China: China International Import Expo Highlights Pakistan’s Success

SHANGHAI, Nov. 8 – Pakistan has secured a spot among the top ten grain exporters to China in 2022, with a total export value of $456 million, representing a 14.12% growth year-on-year. This impressive achievement was revealed in the 2023 China Import Food Report, which was released during the China Import Food Summit at the China International Import Expo (CIIE) held in Shanghai. The report highlights the increasing influence and success of Pakistani grain exports in the Chinese market.

Muhammad Omair, a prominent Pakistani sesame and rice dealer, expressed his excitement about his first visit to China. He emphasized the importance of the Chinese market, stating, “China is a crucial market for us. Its vibrant consumption market has amazed me.” Omair’s company alone has already exported more than 150 containers of sesame to China this year, and he is determined to further increase these numbers by setting up an exhibition stand at the CIIE.

Omair attributes Pakistan’s success in grain exports to the bilateral free trade agreement, which has facilitated competitive prices, high-quality products, and cost-effective freight options. He specifically highlighted the growing popularity of sesame in China due to its high oil content, which makes it an attractive choice for oil extraction companies.

Recent statistics from China’s General Administration of Customs indicate that Pakistan’s sesame exports to China have reached a value of $56,446,268 in the first three quarters of this year alone. This marks a significant 41% increase compared to the same period in 2022. Additionally, China’s import of broken rice from Pakistan has also witnessed a notable 20% growth, further showcasing the demand for Pakistani grain products in the Chinese market.

Omair also acknowledged the importance of the CIIE in promoting international business opportunities. He highlighted the event’s value in providing “golden matchmaking opportunities” for Pakistani and other international businesses to explore the vast and open Chinese market. Despite the challenges posed by the global pandemic, the CIIE was organized offline, enabling businesses to seize lucrative opportunities for growth.

In conclusion, Pakistan’s remarkable success as a grain exporter to China underscores the strength of its trade relationship with its eastern neighbor. As Pakistan continues to expand its presence in the Chinese market, the opportunities for growth and collaboration between the two countries are bound to flourish.
