Rice Exporters Target Lucrative Kenyan Market

Kenya’s High Commissioner to Pakistan, Nyambura Kamau, recently met with the Rice Exporters Association of Pakistan (REAP) in Karachi to discuss ways of enhancing trade and economic ties between the two nations. The meeting took place at REAP House Karachi, where the association hosted a reception for Kamau and her team.

During the meeting, both parties exchanged views on current issues and opportunities in bilateral trade, with a focus on the rice sector. REAP Chairman Chela Ram Kewlani emphasized that Pakistan has always been a reliable and trustworthy rice supplier, playing a significant role in food security, particularly in Africa. He contrasted Pakistan’s consistent rice exports with India’s occasional restrictions.

Highlighting the importance of the relationship, Kewlani pointed out that Kenya is Pakistan’s largest trading partner in Africa. Additionally, Pakistan ranks among the top importers of Kenyan tea. Expanding on this, Kewlani stated that there are still significant opportunities to strengthen trade relations further between the two countries. The visit of the High Commissioner is expected to be a valuable asset in achieving this goal.

Abdul Rahim Janoo, former Chairman of the Rice Exporters Association of Pakistan, also stressed the significance of the Kenyan market for Pakistani rice. The two countries have enjoyed excellent and long-standing trading relations.

During the meeting, Rafique Suleman, the Convener of the REAP Kenya Committee, addressed the audience on the challenges faced by Pakistani rice exporters when exporting to Kenya. Suleman requested the High Commissioner’s assistance in resolving these issues.

In response, the Kenyan High Commissioner expressed her commitment to working with relevant authorities in her country to address the concerns raised by Pakistani rice exporters. She stated her keenness to promote mutual trade and economic cooperation between Kenya and Pakistan, as well as to explore new avenues of collaboration.

Overall, the meeting between the Kenyan High Commissioner and the Rice Exporters Association of Pakistan highlighted the importance of the bilateral trade relationship, especially in the rice sector. Both parties expressed their commitment to further enhancing trade ties, ensuring a prosperous future for both nations.
