Punjab Minister for Agriculture S. M. Tanveer announced on Thursday that Pakistan is the fourth largest rice exporting country in the world, generating a staggering 3 billion US dollars in foreign exchange this year from this trade. Rice is not only an essential part of our diet but also a significant contributor to our economy, particularly with the popularity of our basmati rice, renowned for its aroma and quality. The Minister shared these remarks during the centenary celebrations at Rice Research Institute Kala Shah Kaku.

During his address, Minister Tanveer commended the institute for its century-long journey and highlighted the pivotal role played by its scientists in facilitating rice cultivation and production. He expressed his delight in knowing that the Rice Research Institute Kala Shah Kaku has successfully developed 29 new varieties of paddy. These new varieties not only possess exceptional nutritional properties but also carry the same distinct fragrance that basmati rice is adored for. The Minister emphasized the importance of continuous research and development to counter climate change and discourage excessive pesticide usage by farmers.

Furthermore, Minister Tanveer urged farmers to refrain from burning paddy residue, as it contributes to dangerous smog that poses a severe risk to our health and environment. Instead, he encouraged farmers to follow proper disposal methods recommended by the Department of Agriculture to maintain clean surroundings.

Dr. Akhtar, Chief Scientist at Ayub Agricultural Research Institute in Faisalabad, applauded the efforts of the agricultural scientists at Rice Research Institute. He assured farmers that the institute’s experts are dedicated to providing technical guidance and introducing new varieties to enhance their productivity.

Notably, Rice Research Institute Kala Shah Kaku is home to ISO 17025 accredited laboratories, which prioritize reducing the harmful effects of toxins on paddy crops. Chief Executive of Punjab Agriculture Research Board (PARB), Dr. Abid Mehmood, and Chief Scientist Rice Research Institute Kala Shah Kaku, Syed Sultan Ali, also addressed the ceremony, further highlighting the institute’s contributions to the agricultural sector.
