Pakistan’s Economy Shows Improvement, Says Caretaker Finance Minister
KARACHI: Pakistan’s caretaker Minister for Finance, Shamshad Akhtar, has announced that the country is on track with its International Monetary Fund (IMF) program. Speaking in Karachi, Akhtar emphasized that Pakistan’s economic situation is rapidly improving, thanks to careful economic policies being implemented.
Under the caretaker government’s supervision, stringent measures are being taken to revive the economy and bring about improvements in the industrial sector. Additionally, the government is actively addressing smuggling issues.
According to the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS), the weekly inflation rate, measured by the Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI), has decreased by 0.33 percent during the week ending on October 19. Data from the PBS indicate that the Combined Index was recorded at 277.11 compared to 278.04 on October 19, 2023. In comparison, a year ago, on October 27, 2022, the index was 213.74.
Of the 51 items monitored, 14 items saw an increase in average price, 17 items decreased, and 20 items remained stable. Notably, there have been significant decreases in the prices of Chicken (10.19 percent), Onions (4.4 percent), Rice IRRI-6/9 (3.84 percent), Bananas (3.64 percent), Gur (3.4 percent), Pulse Masoor (2.36 percent), Sugar (2.22 percent), and Mustard Oil (2.17 percent).
Conversely, there were notable increases in the prices of Tomatoes (20.81 percent), Potatoes (3.33 percent), Eggs (1.63 percent), Salt Powdered (0.91 percent), Garlic (0.77 percent), Tea Prepared (0.67 percent), Bread Plain (0.56 percent), and Mutton (0.28 percent).
