India Experiences 19% Rise in Mango Exports, Valued at $47.98 Million
India’s Mango Exports Witness a 19% Surge in the First Five Months of the Financial Year
The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) and the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare have recently announced a significant increase in mango exports from India. According to the reports, there has been a remarkable 19% growth in mango exports during the first five months of the ongoing financial year. In terms of value, India has exported mangoes worth $47.98 million, compared to $40.33 million in the same period last year. This surge in exports showcases a promising trend for the country’s mango industry.
Collaborating with the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, APEDA played a crucial role in facilitating and promoting these exports. Notably, from April to August 2023, a total of 27,330.02 MT of mangoes were successfully exported. This achievement reflects the dedication and efforts put forth by the authorities involved in the agricultural sector.
The USA has emerged as a major market for Indian mango exports, witnessing a 19% increase alone. In the first five months, India exported a total of 2043.60 MT of mangoes to the US market. Additionally, other countries such as Japan (43.08 MT), New Zealand (110.99 MT), Australia (58.42 MT), and South Africa (4.44 MT) have also experienced a rise in Indian mango imports. Expanding its reach, India has explored new markets in countries including Iran, Mauritius, the Czech Republic, and Nigeria as part of its ambitious export strategy.
Expansion of Mango Export Facilities for Enhanced Trade
In an effort to boost mango exports in the 2023 season, the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare and APEDA have taken proactive measures. These include inviting inspectors from the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Animal & Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS). These inspectors have been invited for preclearance of mangoes at irradiation facilities located in Vashi, Nashik, Bangalore, and Ahmedabad. This step ensures regulatory compliance and helps streamline the export process.
Similarly, inspectors from South Korea were also invited to perform preclearance of mangoes. This has enabled India to export an impressive 18.43 MT of mangoes after undergoing treatment at authorised vapour heat treatment facilities. The efforts of APEDA to showcase Indian mangoes were also evident as they participated in events such as the Seoul Food & Hotel Show, where ample opportunities for export promotion were presented.
In line with India’s ongoing celebrations of the 75th Independence anniversary, APEDA took the initiative to export 75 eastern varieties of mangoes, including 5 GI-tagged varieties, to Bahrain. This move not only highlights the diverse range of mangoes produced in India but also serves as a gesture of cultural exchange and goodwill.
Promotion and Engagement Initiatives to Expand Market Reach
APEDA, in collaboration with Indian Missions in various countries, organized a series of promotion events for mangoes. These events played a crucial role in creating awareness and generating interest among potential buyers. One such event was a mango-tasting session held in Brussels, featuring popular varieties such as Amrapalli, Banganapalli, Kesar, and Himsagar. These initiatives aim to showcase the quality and distinct flavors of Indian mangoes.
In addition, APEDA organized a dedicated mango promotion program in Malaysia, where the famous Kesar and Banganapalli mangoes were showcased. These events in Malaysia, as well as in Afghanistan and Kuwait, held in collaboration with the respective Embassies of India, have paved the way for potential trade opportunities and the introduction of Indian mangoes to new markets.
Conclusion
The significant increase in mango exports during the first five months of the financial year demonstrates the growing demand and popularity of Indian mangoes in the international market. The collaborative efforts of APEDA, along with the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, have played a integral role in strengthening India’s position as a leading exporter of mangoes. With continued focus on quality, innovation, and market expansion, the future of India’s mango industry looks bright.
