Pakistan Sees Drop in Weekly Inflation: Pakistan Bureau of Statistics

ISLAMABAD – The Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) reported a decrease of 0.33% in the weekly inflation, as measured by the Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI), for the week ended on October 19. The Combined Index stood at 277.11, compared to 278.04 on October 19, 2023, and 213.74 a year ago on October 27, 2022.

Out of a total of 51 items, the prices of 14 items increased, 17 items decreased, and 20 items remained stable.

Major Decreases in Prices

Significant decreases were observed in the prices of the following items:

  • Chicken: 10.19% decrease
  • Onions: 4.4% decrease
  • Rice IRRI-6/9: 3.84% decrease
  • Bananas: 3.64% decrease
  • Gur: 3.4% decrease
  • Pulse Masoor: 2.36% decrease
  • Sugar: 2.22% decrease
  • Mustard Oil: 2.17% decrease

Major Increases in Prices

On the other hand, significant increases were observed in the prices of the following items:

  • Tomatoes: 20.81% increase
  • Potatoes: 3.33% increase
  • Eggs: 1.63% increase
  • Salt Powdered: 0.91% increase
  • Garlic: 0.77% increase
  • Tea Prepared: 0.67% increase
  • Bread Plain: 0.56% increase
  • Mutton: 0.28% increase

Year-on-Year Trends

The year-on-year trend shows the following changes in prices:

  • 29.65% increase in overall inflation
  • 108.38% increase in gas charges for Q1
  • 94.46% increase in the prices of cigarettes
  • 84.11% increase in the prices of chilies powder
  • 78.51% increase in the prices of broken rice basmati
  • 77.49% increase in the prices of wheat flour
  • 63.22% increase in the prices of sugar
  • 62.83% increase in the prices of rice IRRI-6/9
  • 58.05% increase in the prices of gents sponge chappal
  • 57.73% increase in the prices of gur
  • 54.84% increase in the prices of salt powdered

Meanwhile, the prices of the following items decreased on a year-on-year basis:

  • 31.90% decrease in the prices of tomatoes
  • 24.88% decrease in the prices of onions
  • 5.82% decrease in the prices of pulse gram
  • 4.16% decrease in the prices of mustard oil
  • 0.92% decrease in the prices of vegetable ghee (1 Kg)
