Vulnerable Fishermen in Gopalganj Receive VGF Rice During Hilsa Ban Period
Gopalganj, October 26, 2023 – In an effort to support the conservation of hilsa fish, the Department of Fisheries and District Administration in Gopalganj have provided vulnerable fishermen families with vulnerable group feeding (VGF) rice. These families were unable to fish for mother hilsa fish in the river during the government-imposed ban period.
To ensure these families have sustenance during the ban, each fisherman family received 25 kilograms (kg) of rice free of cost. Mr. Bijan Kumar Nandi, the fisheries officer of the district, confirmed the distribution of rice to each family.
Hilsa fish is one of the geographical indication (GI) products of Bangladesh, and the ban on catching hilsa extends from October 12 to November 2. This period is crucial as it coincides with the main breeding season of hilsa. The ban aims to preserve and protect hilsa fish populations.
As part of this humanitarian aid program, a total of 1,002 families in Gopalganj district were provided with rice. The distribution was carried out as follows: 470 families in Gopalganj Sadar upazila, 300 families in Tungipara upazila, and 232 families in Kashiani upazila were supported through the rice distribution.
The VGF rice distribution serves as a lifeline for the fishermen community during the ban. It not only ensures their well-being but also contributes to the sustainable management and conservation of hilsa fish. By providing essential sustenance, the government and local authorities acknowledge the important role of these fishermen in preserving the natural resources of the region.
