Essex cricketer Catherine Dalton has made history as the first woman to be employed as a men’s cricket fast-bowling coach. Dalton, who played for Ireland in one-day internationals and T20 matches, as well as representing Essex in women’s county cricket, will join Pakistan Super League (PSL) side Multan Sultans for their 2024 season. This appointment also makes her the first female coach at a club in Pakistan.

The news was announced by Multan Sultans owner Ali Tareen, who contacted Dalton while she was on holiday in Greece. Dalton expressed her excitement about the opportunity to work with talented fast bowlers in such a globally significant competition like the PSL. She believes that as long as she can add value to a player’s performance, the source of the knowledge doesn’t matter.

The squads for the upcoming PSL season have not been confirmed yet, but the competition is scheduled to begin on February 8. Dalton’s appointment as a men’s cricket fast-bowling coach marks a significant milestone for women in the sport and highlights the progressive approach taken by the Multan Sultans in embracing diversity and expertise.
