India has lifted export restrictions on non-basmati white rice, allowing the export of 95,000 tonnes of rice to Nepal. Previously, there were restrictions in place due to high domestic demand for rice in India, with only basmati rice being allowed for import into Nepal.

The Indian government’s Director General of Foreign Trade issued a notification on this decision. This export opportunity has been granted to seven countries, including Nepal, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivore, Guinea, Malaysia, Philippines, and Seychelles, through the National Cooperative Exports Limited of India. Nepal’s allocated quantity is 95,000 tonnes.

The implementation of a 20% export duty on non-basmati white rice in August was an effort to discourage imports in order to stabilize the local grain market. This recent export permission is expected to alleviate pressure on the domestic market.

Nepal has been heavily reliant on importing rice and paddy from India for the past decade to fulfill its food requirements.
