First Quarter of FY 2023-24 Witnesses 18.88% Surge in Food Exports and 32% Drop in Imports
During the first quarter of the financial year 2023-24, Pakistan’s food group exports experienced a significant increase of 18.88 percent compared to the previous year. According to data from the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics, from July to September 2023, food commodities worth $1.280 billion were exported, compared to $1.077 billion in the same period last year.
Increase in Rice Exports
One of the key contributors to this growth in exports was the rice sector, which witnessed a 0.98 percent increase. A total of 595,557 metric tons of rice, valued at $406.387 million, were exported during this period. This demonstrates the strong demand for Pakistan’s rice in international markets.
Exports of Fish and Fish Preparations
The exports of fish and fish preparations also saw a positive growth of 3.75 percent. Approximately 37,803 metric tons of fish and fish preparations, with a value of $83.064 million, were exported during the first quarter of the financial year.
Increase in Fruit Exports
Pakistan’s fruit exports also experienced a significant boost during this period. Approximately 155,776 metric tons of fruits, earning the country $88.668 million, were exported. This is compared to the exports of 105,950 metric tons of fruits, valued at $78.867 million, during the same period last year.
Export of Leguminous Vegetables (Pulses)
Additionally, the export of leguminous vegetables, commonly known as pulses, also showed remarkable growth. Over 96 metric tons of pulses, valued at $84,000, were exported during the first quarter of the current financial year. This marks an 80.08 percent increase from the same period last year when 48 metric tons, worth $47,000, were exported.
Overall, Pakistan’s food exports have witnessed substantial growth, indicating the country’s competitiveness in the international market. The continuous increase in exports of various food commodities showcases the potential of Pakistan’s agricultural sector.
