Export Ban Hitting Paddy Farmers: Hooda Highlights Deteriorating Quality of Life
Haryana Government Urged to Streamline Paddy Procurement by Bhupinder Singh Hooda
In order to address the challenges faced by farmers in selling their paddy, former Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition, Bhupinder Singh Hooda, has called for an increase in the quota of shellers. He emphasized that the low number of people purchasing paddy in the market has resulted in difficulties for farmers and has prevented them from receiving fair prices for their produce. Hooda suggested that the government should issue release orders to resolve these issues and also lift the ban on paddy exports. Additionally, he recommended abolishing export duties to enable farmers to take advantage of higher international prices. Hooda criticized the government for not taking responsibility and relying on unreliable portals for procurement.
Government to Review Minimum Export Price of Basmati Rice
The Indian government is considering a review of the minimum export price (MEP) of basmati rice, which is currently set at $1,200 per tonne. The All India Rice Exporters Association (AIREA) has advised its members to refrain from purchasing paddy due to concerns about the viability of basmati rice exports at the current MEP. AIREA argues that the average export price of basmati rice over the past five years has been $975 per tonne, making the current rate unnecessary. The association also highlights the instability caused by the conflict in West Asia and its impact on trade routes and costs.
Government to Consider Lowering Basmati Rice Minimum Export Price
Responding to industry concerns about high prices affecting outward shipments, the Indian government is contemplating a review of the minimum export price of basmati rice. Rice exporters associations have requested a reduction in the current rate of $1,200 per tonne to approximately $850 per tonne. The government had previously established the minimum export price to prevent the illegal export of non-basmati rice disguised as premium basmati rice. Moreover, the government will examine the prices at which other countries, including Pakistan, are selling basmati rice in international markets.
Hooda Urges Removal of Export Restrictions to Support Paddy Farmers
Bhupinder Hooda, the leader of the opposition in Haryana, reiterated his demand for the removal of export restrictions on paddy. He emphasized that rice exporters have ceased purchasing paddy in seven states, including Haryana, which has resulted in farmers incurring losses. Hooda expressed concern over distress sales and the decline in basmati prices from Rs 3,500 to Rs 2,500 per quintal.
