“Cotton, rice, sugarcane growers call for enforcement of government-set prices”
Appeal for Fair Pricing by Agricultural Organisation Sindh Abadgar Ittehad
In the bustling city of Hyderabad, UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News reported on October 15th, 2023, that the Sindh Abadgar Ittehad, an alliance advocating for farmers’ rights, urged the provincial government to ensure that cotton, rice, and sugarcane farmers receive government-regulated prices.
Sindh Abadgar Ittehad’s Stance on Agricultural Fares
Sindh Abadgar Ittehad’s President Nawab Zubair Talpur voiced his concerns at a Sunday press conference held at the Hyderabad Press Club. He stressed the demand for the withdrawal of the FIR lodged against protesting growers and journalists in Khairpur district. Talpur explained that the FIR was raised against those protesting poor rates offered for cotton outside a cotton factory.
Mixed Signals from the Government
According to Talpur, while the government has expressed an interest in promoting advanced farming practices, the actions needed to ensure the sector’s financial health are lacking. He takes issue with the inconsistency, particularly when provincial government-set prices of Rs 8,500 per 40 kilograms for cotton, Rs 4,500 per 40 kg for Pakistan rice, and Rs 600 per 40 kg for sugarcane are not met.
Highlighting these figures, Talpur asserts that farmers are not receiving these government-fixed rates, marking a potential violation of the law by buyers. He, on behalf of the Sindh Abadgar Ittehad, calls for prompt action to end the exploitation of farmers.
Notable attendees at the press conference included Abdul Raheem Dars, Muhammad Javed, Abdul Razzaq, and other rice exporters officers of Sindh Abadgar Ittehad.
